Vey good camera. Frustration free experience. Just remember to have a phone right at the moment you unbox it to configure. If you have not seen one before and you are buying online without grabbing one on your hands, this is to you: It is small.
It is waterproof, don’t be concerned! I dropped on the pool, aquarium and other places… it works… don’t be afraid to get it wet!
Here is a hint I believe you will like: Most of the people that get the gopro at the first time get annoyed with the “edging” of the image. That rounded image on the sides like a barrel or fish eye. Ok, I hate that too! So good news: you can fix that on the settings and improve it.
Also, remember this camera uses USB Type-C. It is a new standard cable, not the same 100 android phone standard cables you have at the house. If you lose this cable, bye-bye… you won’t charge the camera! So tell your kids: do. not. mess. with. this. cable. Label it because it will mix with the other USB Type Mini-B cables at the house for sure!

I consider myself a more advanced user of cameras, so my criticisms mainly fall into that bucket.

This is a great simple camera for recording high quality video while using a very compact format. Video quality is outstanding. Wind and noise cancellation are pretty good for such a small camera. The on-camera controls are simple to use and provide most hobby and casual users with easily accessible functionality.

The only reason this camera gets three stars is because it can shoot 4K video and does a pretty decent job of that. I couldn’t give a camera that is able to shoot video this well a really bad review, it does achieve the intended purpose of taking good videos.

However, the reason I am currently not a fan of this product lies completely within the realm of usability. Most of the issues with this device could be corrected with a firmware update if GoPro chose to listen to its customers feedback and correct the issues people have been complaining about. There are numerous threads on the GoPro site that echo many of my sentiments below.

The issues I have with usability are as follows:

The app used to connect to the camera wants you to create an account on the GoPro site and log in to connect to the camera. I shoot far too many videos in places where there is NO INTERNET CONNECTION. Since the application won’t let you past the log-in screen, and you need an internet connection for this to function properly, major fail. In particular, if you take a new camera in the box out to a location where there is no internet, you are basically stuck using a computer with GoPro Quik or using the on-camera setting options to get your device set up. I should NOT need an internet connection to use my phone app to connect to the device and manage it – EVER.

Using multiple cameras with the GoPro app is a ROYAL PITA. For whatever reason, GoPro has decided that the camera should serve as a wireless access point and you should connect your phone to that network in order to manage the device. Not terrible if you have only one camera. If you have multiple cameras, you have to constantly switch your network association to a different access point (camera) before you can manage the device (or even turn it on remotely). If GoPro would simply allow you to specify the IP network scheme on the camera, a competent networking engineer can easily set up a wireless bridge and route to all the cameras, the application would just need to know which camera you wanted to connect to, and you could remain inside the management app to switch to a different camera.

The latest session – HERO5 – no longer allows you to change the name of the camera. You are stuck with some “GP12345678” name of the device. This behavior differs from previous models where you could change the camera/WiFi name making a fleet of multiple cameras infinitely more user friendly to manage.

The video management and editing software and their respective attempts at vendor lock in just feel “dirty” to me. You have to agree to all the GoPro content ownership and content policies in order to gain access to some useful content management features built into the mobil or desktop applications. I agree to their terms so that I can get firmware updates, but I put NONE of my content in their system so that I retain full rights to it. I manage my content the “bad ol fashioned way” and pull out micro SD cards and download the videos to a video editing machine.

So, in the end, I have an expensive camera that shoots really good video, but I’m paying a TON of money for GoPro to develop a mobil app, a desktop app, video editing software, and a content sharing system that provide me zero usable features.

Firstly: You cannot plug this in to your Mac – GoPro have deliberately removed that feature so that the camera will not appear as a USB device. On windows, you can SOMETIMES access the camera, but it’s random, and often doesn’t work. This is “normal” according to their support.

Secondly: there is an app, but it requires access to your facebook account (!) and they WILL NOT LET YOU connect to your camera until you give GoPro access to your Facebook. There’s no excuse for this.

Thirdly: even if you give them your details, GoPro will not allow you to connect to your camera from your phone unless you have a strong GPS signal, strong cellphone/mobile network signal, and bluetooth enabled. Instead of implementing a secure login/password/etc, they make it so the camera simply cannot be used without GPS access.

Live in a city center with poor GPS / mobile coverage? Work in an office with no GPS? Forget it – GoPro doesn’t want you to use your camera.

…all of this has been written on the app reviews, on their website, many many times. You can see the complaints going back years. But GoPro chooses not to fix any of this. So … don’t buy!

The GoPro Hero5 Session is a great camera for people who love to go outdoors and want to capture every moment of it in crystal clear 4k resolution. I bought this product to record my outdoors adventures wherever I go because of four unique details that makes this GoPro one of the best.

    1. Waterproof Case
The camera itself is waterproof up to 30ft of water, which means there is no external case needed to take it under water safely. This is the first generation of GoPros that has that waterproof casing already built in and it worked great.
    2. 4K Resolution
The second capability is the 4k resolution allows you to take some of the clearest videos and pictures imaginable. This also is the first generation of GoPros that captures 4K videos and pictures. You are not only limited to 4K, you can easily change the setting down to different resolutions if needed.
    3. Bluetooth Capabilities
Furthermore, this GoPro connects to your phone and allows you to live stream the video being captured and you can also transport pictures and videos wirelessly to your phone for storage. This helps save space on the SD card and is an easy way to transport the media captured.
    4. Easy to Operate
The fourth capability is how easy it is to operate the GoPro. There are only two buttons on the GoPro that you use to change settings and start recording. The menus are also set up in a logical and simple order that allows even the amateur users to become experts quickly. This is also the smaller version of the big GoPro but has all the same capabilities so it saves space and is more compact.

I would recommend two things upon purchase of this item, one is the SD card and another is about the many attachments for the GoPro. Unless the SD comes in a certain bundle, you need to buy the SD card separately which can be inconvenient. It is important that you buy an SD MINI. A NORMAL SD CARD WILL NOT FIT. SD MINI is the only card that will fit for this GoPro. Finally, it is cheaper to buy the attachments separately on Amazon because it saves money and you can get many attachments which is one of the great things about this product.

Overall I recommend this product because of the waterproof case, 4K resolution, Bluetooth capabilities and how easy it is to operate. Hope you enjoyed this review and it proved helpful.

This is a very good quality image camera that can be used in the water. Unfortunately the battery does not last for too long. This product is made of high quality materials, it is waterproof, very compact. Camera can be mounter virtually everywhere (mounting attachments required – and the Chinese cheaper version are fully compatible). Again the battery is its weak point, and it is often overheating (sometimes I can’t touch it after using for 20-30 minutes). It does not come with any screen but connection over wifi to your phone allows the live view option. It seems to be useless as a dashcam (mounting kit is available but recording time is limited… battery won’t charge properly while in use, and it seems that it cannot be powered by the usb cable). 3 strong stars for image quality. Could be 5 but the overheating, battery limitation, not very intuitive app, and lack of the dashcam mode have reduced the final mark. For this price top quality is expected.

We’ve had this for 8 months now and whilst it’s easy to use and super robust there are a few issues which really let it down. On the plus, it’s really intuitive and the video quality is brilliant, and it fits almost anywhere. There’s loads of different clips and cases available cheaply so you can use it in almost any situation without spending a massive amount extra.
Battery life is really low- It’s measured in minutes not hours, I can usually get about 40mins or so if it’s not taken directly from the outlet which isn’t quite enough for an event away from home. I realise that it’s a payoff for the size but I’d rather less video quality and a bit more usability in this area.

The audio quality is poor, really poor so if you want to record voices you really need an additional mic. There’s a Rode one which a lot of people recommend and works well with the go pro 5/6s and would be fine to be an extra because not everyone needs good sound quality BUT…in order to fit any external mic you have to buy the specific go pro mic adapter which is as big as the device, just flaps about on the outside of the device and is an extra £50 on top of the device itself. Its terribly designed, overpriced (more expensive than the mic itself) and seriously damages the usability of the device but is the only one that works. It’s really unforgivable and is possibly even worth a two star reduction.

This camera has been a complete pain in the neck however its not the fault of the seller. The first camera failed after a total of 43 minutes use on the 11th month of Ownership. Guess what it failed on day 2 of a holiday in Thailand. Go pro support was quite good and I sent the camera to them and received a replacement within 3 weeks. Bit late for the holiday though. Within 2 weeks of the replacement being received this camera failed on its second use. It had literally been used for 6minutes footage at the failure point.

Once again I sent the item back to GoPro and 6 weeks later received another replacement. The Customer service has been quite good but these sort of issues are not to be expected from a trusted brand that isn’t exactly cheap. As an early adopter of GoPro products overall I have been happy however and unfortunately I have lost a great deal of confidence and now have changed brands. I find it frustrating that when you contact a company with a complaint or a problem it can be very frustrating and extremely long winded. Its a different story almost every time though if you are looking to make a sale. The response is almost immediate

Works well in my intended application of a quadcopter action camera. 4k quality looks nice and works well with frame interpolation software should you want more than the hardware recorded 30 frames per second. Bitrate could be higher but is overall good. The bitrate is most noticeable when running at 60 frames per second or higher. Battery life is not 2 hours as stated. I found the battery to be closer to 50 minutes which for my current application is more than enough. Stabilisation works well but only works at 1080p or less. Comes with a USB C port for charging and file transfers. Files copied off the device fairly quick.
One thing that annoys me is to use some of the features you must use the phone app and the app requires constant internet access while using it which is silly you should just be able to install the app and use it offline. If the app worked offline id of given 5 stars.
